Customer support AI providers in New Zealand.

Customer support AI is sold in New Zealand three ways: a custom build, a monthly chatbot plan, or the AI inside your helpdesk. This guide lists who offers each, using only what their own websites say.

Short answer

New Zealand providers of customer support chatbots include Levy Street (Wellington), Automate AI (Wellington), Ez-AI (Auckland), Exodesk (Christchurch and Dunedin), Avtrix (Taupō), Enlighten Designs (Hamilton) and Ambit, a New Zealand chatbot platform. Choose by where the answers live: website FAQs suit a monthly plan, a well-kept help centre suits your helpdesk’s own AI, and answers that depend on your systems need a custom build.

  • Published prices on 20 October 2026 ran from NZ$19 a month (self-serve) to NZ$3,000–12,000 builds.
  • Choose by where answers live: your website, your helpdesk, or your own systems and records.
  • Intercom, Zendesk and Freshdesk charge for their AI agents per outcome, resolution or session.
  • Three providers say chat data is hosted in AWS Sydney; Avtrix says data stays in New Zealand.
  • Levy Street builds custom support AI and publishes no prices; simple FAQ bots suit a monthly plan.

Customer support AI means website chatbots, messaging assistants, and AI that drafts or sends helpdesk replies. In New Zealand it is sold three ways: a custom build scoped to your systems, a monthly chatbot plan configured for you, or the AI agent inside your helpdesk. Provider profiles

Levy Street

Levy Street is a Wellington AI studio and engineering company that builds AI chatbots and AI customer support systems on Zendesk, Intercom, Microsoft 365 or a shared inbox. Each answers from approved content, follows written escalation rules and is measured on real conversations. Levy Street worked with BetterWorx on PainPal, and its portfolio includes the Property Management Agent for APL Property. It publishes no prices.

Ambit

Ambit says it is “home-grown in Aotearoa New Zealand” and launched in 2017. Its platform answers from an organisation’s own web pages, PDFs and videos and can hand over to staff, with plans at $1,250 and $2,500 a month (currency and GST not stated). Its client logos include ACC and Mercer.

Automate AI

Automate AI is “a Wellington-based AI automation agency” whose website chatbots are trained on a business’s content and connected to calendars and CRMs, on plans of NZ$99, NZ$249 and NZ$499 a month plus GST. It says chatbot data is stored in AWS’s Sydney region, and it publishes a Grand Events chatbot case study.

Avtrix

Taupō-based Avtrix Software Solutions offers AI customer support across chat, email and social with handoff to a person, at a fixed price agreed before work begins. It says data stays within New Zealand and that it will publish case studies as projects complete (Avtrix).

Bizzy Boss

Bizzy Boss Solutions, “proudly local in Canterbury”, sets up a chatbot for tradies that answers website and social media questions and books jobs. Its pricing was NZ$97 a month plus GST, about 5c per short chat and a NZ$250 setup fee, labelled as introductory pricing ending 30 September.

Enlighten Designs

Enlighten Designs is a Hamilton software company and Microsoft partner whose AI development page offers to “build next-level chatbots” with Azure OpenAI Service. The case studies we found, such as CARTERS and Unison, are not chatbot projects.

EnvokeAI

EnvokeAI is a self-serve platform for website chat agents trained on your documents, with voice agents in private beta. Plans start at NZ$19 a month, it says it is hosted on AWS in Sydney, and it publishes three chatbot case studies.

Exodesk

Exodesk, an IT services firm supporting New Zealand businesses since 1989, builds chatbots for website or staff questions from Christchurch and Dunedin, after comparing existing tools, platforms such as Microsoft Copilot Studio, and custom development.

Ez-AI

Ez-AI is run by Auckland engineer Skene Bennellick, who builds custom chatbots for websites, WhatsApp, Teams, Slack, Zendesk and Freshdesk, with AWS Sydney as default hosting. AI assistant builds are listed at NZ$3,000 to NZ$12,000 plus GST (pricing).

How to choose a customer support AI provider

Start from where the answers live; current, owned content matters more than the provider.

Your situation Start with Why
Answers are on your website; volume is modest A monthly chatbot plan Low running cost, configured for you
Your team works in a helpdesk with a current help centre Its built-in AI agent Already connected to tickets and articles
Answers depend on orders, bookings or accounts A custom build Needs system access and tested rules
You want to do it yourself A self-serve platform Quick start; the testing is yours

Ask every provider, including us:

  • Show us answers to 50 of our real questions, with the source for each.
  • What happens when the bot does not know, and how fast does a person take over?
  • Where are transcripts stored, which model provider processes them, and for how long?
  • What does a month cost at our volume, with usage, setup and GST?
  • What do we keep if we leave: content, prompts, transcripts and settings?

Custom chatbot or your helpdesk’s AI

If your answers live in an Intercom, Zendesk or Freshdesk help centre, try its AI agent first. As listed on 20 October 2026:

  • Intercom Fin: $0.99 per outcome, at most one per conversation, shown without a currency code. Fin also runs on Zendesk and Freshdesk, with a $49 monthly minimum including 50 outcomes (Fin pricing).
  • Zendesk: AI agents are included in every Suite and Support plan and priced on automated resolutions, billed in USD, EUR, GBP or BRL (Zendesk pricing).
  • Freshdesk: Growth, Pro and Enterprise plans include 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions once per account, then US$49 per 100 sessions (Freshdesk pricing).

Build custom when answers depend on systems the helpdesk cannot reach, or when you need your own evaluation and logs. Our guides to AI and Intercom and AI and Zendesk cover both routes, and a short assessment can settle it before you commit.

Red flags when buying customer support AI

  • A promise of no wrong answers. Any language model can be confidently wrong. Ask for test results.
  • Resolution counts taken at face value. Intercom counts an “assumed resolution” when a customer leaves without asking for more help (Fin outcomes). Someone who gave up looks the same, so read conversations yourself.
  • No visible route to a person. Customers should reach a human whenever they ask.
  • Nobody owns the content. A bot quoting last year’s prices is worse than no bot.

New Zealand rules that apply

  • Privacy Act 2020. Transcripts are personal information. IPP 3 requires reasonable steps so people know information is being collected and why (Privacy Act 2020), so say up front that an automated assistant is answering. Since 1 May 2026, IPP 3A applies when you collect information about people from someone else, such as enriching chat leads.
  • Offshore providers. You stay fully responsible for data a provider processes for you. If it uses the data for its own purposes offshore, IPP 12 applies, and without a listed ground that needs the person’s permission.
  • Fair Trading Act 1986. Misleading or deceptive conduct in trade is prohibited (Fair Trading Act), including what your chatbot tells customers.

When you do not need a provider

With a handful of questions a week, a clearer FAQ page beats a chatbot, a point Exodesk also makes. If your questions are simple and answered on your website, a self-serve plan or your helpdesk’s AI costs less than a custom build from anyone, including Levy Street. If customers mostly phone, compare an AI chatbot with a voice agent first.

Questions people ask

Which New Zealand companies build customer support AI assistants?

As listed on their own websites on 20 October 2026, they include Levy Street in Wellington, which builds custom support AI on helpdesks and business systems; Automate AI, also in Wellington, with monthly chatbot plans; Ez-AI in Auckland; Exodesk in Christchurch and Dunedin; Avtrix in Taupō; Enlighten Designs in Hamilton; Bizzy Boss in Canterbury, for tradies; EnvokeAI, a self-serve platform; and Ambit, a New Zealand chatbot platform whose clients include ACC.

Should a New Zealand business build a custom chatbot or use Intercom, Zendesk or Freshdesk AI?

Try your helpdesk’s AI first if the answers already sit in its help centre and the billing works at your volume. On 20 October 2026 Intercom listed Fin at $0.99 per outcome, Zendesk included AI agents in every Suite and Support plan billed per automated resolution, and Freshdesk sold extra AI agent sessions at US$49 per 100. Build custom when answers need other systems or strict escalation rules. See our notes on AI and Intercom and AI and Zendesk.

How much does an AI chatbot cost in New Zealand?

Published prices on 20 October 2026: EnvokeAI’s self-serve chat plans from NZ$19 a month, Bizzy Boss NZ$97 a month plus GST and usage, Automate AI NZ$99 to NZ$499 a month plus GST, and Ambit from $1,250 a month. Ez-AI lists fixed-price AI assistant builds of NZ$3,000 to NZ$12,000 plus GST. Levy Street, Avtrix, Exodesk and Enlighten Designs quote per project. Add model usage, hosting and the staff time to keep content current.

Where do New Zealand chatbot providers store conversation data?

It varies, so ask in writing. On 20 October 2026 Automate AI said chatbot data is stored in AWS’s Sydney region, Ez-AI named AWS Sydney as its default with NZ-only deployments on request, EnvokeAI said its platform is hosted on AWS in Sydney, and Avtrix said it designs solutions so data stays in New Zealand. The model provider may process messages elsewhere. Under the Privacy Act 2020 you stay responsible for transcripts a provider handles for you.

Can we set up a chatbot ourselves instead of hiring a provider?

Yes, for simple website questions. Self-serve platforms such as EnvokeAI say you can upload your information and go live the same day, and Intercom, Zendesk and Freshdesk include AI agents you configure yourself. Get help when the bot must look up orders or bookings, follow written escalation rules, or answer from content that contradicts itself. Whoever sets it up, test it on 50 real questions from your inbox before customers see it.
