Microsoft partner or independent AI consultancy.

If your organisation runs on Microsoft 365, the obvious AI partner is a Microsoft partner. Often that is right. Here is what the badges prove, what they cost you, and when an independent consultancy is the better call.

Short answer

A Microsoft AI partner in New Zealand is a firm in Microsoft’s AI Cloud Partner Program, ideally holding a Solutions Partner designation and a Copilot or Azure AI specialisation. Choose one when your AI work lives inside Microsoft 365, Copilot or Azure. Choose an independent, lab-agnostic consultancy when you need models from several labs tested on your task. Levy Street is independent, not a Microsoft partner.

  • A Solutions Partner designation needs a capability score of at least 70 out of 100.
  • The Microsoft 365 Copilot specialisation requires a passed audit on top of a designation.
  • Gold and Silver competencies were retired on 30 September 2022; ask for current designation names.
  • Use a Microsoft partner for licences, tenant settings and Copilot; an independent for multi-lab builds.
  • Levy Street is not a Microsoft partner; it trains teams on Copilot and builds with several labs.

Levy Street is an independent AI studio and is not a Microsoft partner, so read this as a comparison written by one side. Every Microsoft programme detail below comes from Microsoft’s own partner pages, and every partner detail from that firm’s New Zealand website, as listed on 20 October 2026.

What does a Microsoft partner designation mean?

A Microsoft partner is any member of the Microsoft AI Cloud Partner Program. The designations on top of membership are what carry information. A Solutions Partner designation requires a partner capability score of at least 70 out of 100 in a solution area, built from customer additions, certifications, usage growth and deployments. Specialisations sit on top and test narrower skills.

Credential What Microsoft requires What it tells you about AI work
Program membership Enrolment Little on its own
Solutions Partner for AI Business Solutions Capability score of 70 or more through the Business Applications or Modern Work path Has sold and deployed Microsoft 365, Dynamics or Power Platform, with Copilot adoption in scope
Microsoft 365 Copilot specialisation A designation, performance and skilling thresholds, and a passed audit Audited Copilot deployment capability
AI Platform or AI Apps on Microsoft Azure Azure designation, performance and skilling, then an audit Building AI solutions on Azure
Frontier Partner Designations or specialisations across more than one area, plus an audit AI agents across Copilot, Azure AI Foundry, Fabric, GitHub and security
Solutions Partner for Microsoft Cloud All Solutions Partner designations Breadth across Microsoft’s cloud

Three details matter when you read a partner’s website. Microsoft says “Solutions Partner” is not an endorsement or guarantee of a partner’s work. Gold and Silver competencies were retired on 30 September 2022, so those claims are out of date. And you can check any claim in Microsoft’s partner directory.

Microsoft partner vs independent AI consultancy compared

Factor Microsoft partner Independent AI consultancy
Licences A Cloud Solution Provider can provision, bill and support Microsoft services Not a reseller; you buy from Microsoft or a partner
Copilot rollout and tenant settings Core work, with an audited specialisation available Can train and advise, without Microsoft certification
Models Microsoft’s catalogue; Copilot now offers model choice Chosen across labs by testing on your task
Where agents run Microsoft 365, Copilot Studio and Azure Varies: Azure, AWS, Google Cloud or your own servers
How they are paid Services, and for CSPs, recurring licence revenue Usually services only; ask about referral fees
Proof to ask for Designation and specialisation names, verified in the directory Named projects, test results and code you will own

What Microsoft partners are good at

Microsoft partners are strongest where the work lives inside your tenant: licences, identity, SharePoint permissions, Copilot rollout, Copilot Studio agents and Azure data platforms. The Cloud Solution Provider programme lets a partner own the customer relationship end to end. Examples from New Zealand firms’ own sites:

Large advisory firms sell Microsoft AI work too: KPMG New Zealand offers Copilot readiness work covering access control and oversharing. And Microsoft partners are not always single-vendor: Theta’s package page offers help for teams on a different AI platform, and Enlighten’s AI development page names both Azure AI and Google’s Vertex AI.

When an independent, lab-agnostic consultancy fits better

An independent consultancy fits when the right answer may not be Microsoft’s, or when you want a second opinion on a partner’s proposal.

  • Customer-facing or high-volume agents. Per-message costs and processing region decide these; see Copilot Studio vs custom agents.
  • Work outside Microsoft 365. Teams on Google Workspace, Xero or industry software need integrations, not tenant settings.
  • Model choice by testing. Running the same task through models from several labs and scoring the results; our AI model selection service does this.
  • Data location questions. Our Microsoft Copilot guide sets out where Copilot processes New Zealand data; a custom build can choose its region.

Be fair to the other side: “lab agnostic” is less distinctive than it was. Microsoft lists model choice in Copilot, and its documentation covers Anthropic models inside Copilot.

Levy Street works this way. We hold no Microsoft designation, cannot sell you licences, and do run Microsoft Copilot training that starts with your tenant’s settings, alongside custom builds on OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and open-weight models.

What each route costs in the first year

Stated assumptions: 40 staff, the Microsoft 365 Copilot Business add-on at Microsoft’s New Zealand list price on 20 October 2026, prices before GST.

Cost line Microsoft partner route Independent route
Copilot licences NZ$16,320 a year (NZ$34.00 × 40 × 12) Same licences, bought from Microsoft or a partner
First agent proof of concept Published example: $6,000 + GST over four weeks (Theta) Quoted per scope; Levy Street does not publish prices
Customer-facing agent Standalone Copilot Studio plan or Azure usage Model API usage plus hosting, priced by volume
Ongoing Licence renewals and any managed service Support retainer or an internal owner

Microsoft also lists a first-year promotional price of NZ$29.14 for annual commitments made by 31 December 2026, which would bring the licence line to NZ$13,987.20. The licence cost is the same on either route; the difference is in services and in which platform your agents run on.

Which should you choose?

Choose a Microsoft partner if

  • You need licences, identity and tenant configuration from one supplier.
  • Your AI work is Copilot adoption and internal Copilot Studio agents.
  • Your data platform is Azure or Fabric and you want it run as a managed service.

Choose an independent AI consultancy if

  • You want models from several labs compared on your own task before you commit.
  • The system faces customers or runs at high volume.
  • Your core systems sit outside Microsoft, or you want an outside check on a partner’s plan.

Many organisations use both: a partner for licences and tenant work, an independent for builds and testing. For the wider question of firm size, see big consultancy vs specialist AI firm.

Where each goes wrong

  • Badge read as AI skill. A designation scores sales, certifications and deployments; ask for the AI specialisation and a similar project.
  • Copilot oversharing. Copilot surfaces what each user can already open, so fix permissions before rollout.
  • Licence-led advice. A CSP earns licence revenue; ask how the recommendation would change if licences cost nothing extra.
  • Custom where Copilot would do. An independent can over-build. If licensed staff need an internal assistant, Copilot may be enough.
  • No owner. Either route fails without someone inside measuring use. If you want a view on your options, book an AI assessment.

Questions people ask

What is a Microsoft Solutions Partner?

A Solutions Partner is a member of Microsoft’s AI Cloud Partner Program that has scored at least 70 out of 100 in a solution area, based on customer additions, certifications, usage growth and deployments. Designations cover areas such as AI Business Solutions and Security, and partners can then earn specialisations, some of which need an audit. Microsoft says the label is not an endorsement or guarantee of a partner’s work.

How do I check whether a company is a Microsoft partner in New Zealand?

Search Microsoft’s partner directory on Microsoft Marketplace and look for the exact designation and specialisation names, such as Solutions Partner for AI Business Solutions or the Microsoft 365 Copilot specialisation. Be wary of Gold or Silver partner claims: Microsoft retired those competencies on 30 September 2022. Then ask which of the partner’s New Zealand projects resembles yours.

Do I need a Microsoft partner to buy Copilot in New Zealand?

No. Microsoft sells Copilot plans directly on its New Zealand website: on 20 October 2026, Microsoft 365 Business Standard with Copilot listed at NZ$38.00 a user a month and the Copilot Business add-on at NZ$34.00, both paid yearly and excluding tax. Cloud Solution Provider partners can also provision, bill and support Microsoft services, which suits organisations wanting one supplier for licences, setup and support.

Is Levy Street a Microsoft partner?

No. Levy Street is an independent AI engineering company and holds no Microsoft designation or specialisation. It trains New Zealand teams on Microsoft Copilot and builds custom AI systems on models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and open-weight providers, chosen by testing. If you need licences, tenant configuration or a Microsoft-audited Copilot specialisation, use a Microsoft partner; an independent can work alongside one.

Should a Microsoft 365 organisation build agents in Copilot Studio or custom?

Start with Copilot Studio for internal agents used by staff who already hold Copilot licences, because it sits inside the tools they use and needs little code. Consider a custom agent for customer-facing, high-volume or multi-system work, where you need control over the model, costs and processing region. Our Copilot Studio versus custom agents comparison has the credit rates and a worked example.
