Short answer

Levy Street is a Wellington-based AI engineering and advisory company that works with Auckland organisations. We travel to Auckland for discovery, mapping workflows in person and testing AI on your own documents, then build remotely from Wellington with regular on-site visits. Auckland’s largest sectors, health care, professional services, retail, manufacturing and finance, all have clear document and enquiry workloads to start with.

  • We have no Auckland office; discovery is done on site by travelling to you.
  • Auckland holds 35% of New Zealand’s business locations and employees (Stats NZ, February 2025).
  • Microsoft and AWS both run cloud regions in Auckland, so data can be stored locally.
  • No major AI provider processes AI requests inside New Zealand as of October 2026.

How we work with Auckland organisations

Levy Street is based in Wellington. We do not have an Auckland office, and we will not invent one. What we do is travel to Auckland for the parts of an engagement that need to happen in the room: mapping the workflow with the people who do it, reviewing prototypes on your documents, testing with users, launching and training. The engineering in between runs remotely from Wellington, with regular visits agreed at the start of each stage.

That split follows where the value is. Most of what makes an AI system succeed is learned by watching the work, and most of the build is focused engineering that does not need a meeting room.

Auckland’s economy at a glance

Auckland is a third of the country’s commercial life. In February 2025 the region had 229,770 business locations and 863,300 employees, 35% of New Zealand’s total on both counts; employee numbers fell 2.5% over the year while business locations rose 0.8% (Stats NZ). Auckland produced 37.5% of national GDP, $161.8 billion, in the year to March 2025 (Stats NZ).

By employees, the largest industries were health care and social assistance (95,500), professional, scientific and technical services (93,200), retail (81,200) and manufacturing (77,300) (Stats NZ data; ranking ours). By GDP in the year to March 2024, the latest with an industry split, professional services ($17.2 billion) led financial and insurance services ($16.7 billion), construction ($12.6 billion) and manufacturing ($12.0 billion) (regional GDP tables). These are provisional figures that Stats NZ refreshes on 30 October 2026.

Where AI use cases are clearest in Auckland

Sector Clear first use cases Why it suits Watch for
Health care (administration) Appointment enquiry routing, referral paperwork, non-clinical policy search High enquiry volumes, repeatable answers No clinical decisions; health privacy rules
Professional services Proposal preparation, research briefings Hours of drafting and searching per job Confidentiality, citation checks
Retail Product catalogue enrichment, customer question answering Large catalogues, repetitive questions Accurate product claims under the Fair Trading Act
Manufacturing Supplier document extraction, quality report triage Structured documents in many formats Scanned forms, part numbers in ERP systems
Financial and insurance Claims document triage, onboarding document checks Document-heavy, rules-based checks Regulator expectations on accountability

Two sector notes matter for Auckland. In health, Health New Zealand tells its staff not to use generative AI for clinical decisions or personalised patient advice (Health NZ), even as AI scribes went live in every emergency department in February 2026 (Beehive); administration is the right starting point. In financial advice, the FMA opened an exploratory thematic review of AI in August 2026.

Cloud infrastructure on your doorstep

Auckland is where New Zealand’s hyperscale cloud lives. Microsoft opened its New Zealand North region in December 2024, and AWS opened its Asia Pacific (New Zealand) region in September 2025. Amazon Bedrock has been callable from Auckland since March 2026, but through cross-region inference: its AU profile sends Claude requests to Auckland, Sydney or Melbourne (AWS). Google announced an Auckland region in 2022, but it does not appear in Google’s region list as of 15 October 2026 (Google Cloud). In practice your documents and search index can sit in Auckland, while model processing usually happens in Australia or further away. Our guide to data residency for AI systems sets out the options.

Auckland also hosts significant AI research, including the University of Auckland’s shortlisted Aotearoa Agentic AI Platform concept for the national AI research platform (Beehive).

How an Auckland engagement runs

  1. We come to you for discovery. Workflow sessions in your Auckland premises with the people who do the work, plus the documents and numbers we need.
  2. Prototypes, tested on your material. Built in Wellington, reviewed with your team in person or by video, depending on the stage.
  3. A decision in your boardroom. Ranking, recommendation and running costs, presented to the people who approve them.
  4. Remote build, regular visits. Engineering runs from Wellington; visits cover user testing, launch and training, on a schedule agreed up front.

The method is the same as our national AI consulting service.

Questions people ask

Do you have an Auckland office?

No. Levy Street is based in Wellington, and we will not pretend otherwise. We travel to Auckland for discovery, prototype reviews, user testing, launch and training, because those need to happen with your people in the room. The engineering in between runs remotely, with progress reviews by video and regular visits agreed at the start of each stage.

How often will you be in Auckland during a project?

We agree it per engagement, stage by stage, so it is written down before work starts. Discovery and launch are always in person. During a build, visits line up with the moments that need users present: testing prototypes, checking review screens and training staff. Everything else, from code reviews to weekly check-ins, works well remotely.

Can our data stay in Auckland?

Stored data, yes: Microsoft’s New Zealand North region and AWS’s Asia Pacific (New Zealand) region are both in Auckland. AI processing is different. As of October 2026 no major provider runs its models inside New Zealand; Amazon Bedrock’s AU profile keeps Claude processing within Australia and New Zealand. We document both locations so your privacy assessment is accurate.

Do you work with Auckland healthcare organisations?

On administration only, such as appointment enquiries, referral paperwork and non-clinical policy search. We do not build systems that make clinical decisions or give personalised medical advice, which Health New Zealand’s guidance bars its own staff from doing with generative AI. Health information also carries its own privacy code, so assessments start early.

Is it more expensive to use a Wellington firm?

Travel is the only difference, and it appears as its own line in the scope so you can see it. Remote build work costs the same wherever the client is. Against that, you get engineers who build and run production AI, and the in-person time is spent where it matters most: understanding the work and testing with the people who will use the system.

Have something to build?

Tell us about the workflow. We will map where AI can change speed, margin or decision quality, and what it would take to run it in production.
